Psychology, unlike other sciences, has observable variables but non observable variables (emotions, thoughts, beliefs, past individual history, self conception…). Due to these non observable objects of study, psychology had to discover its own method to discover the natural laws that explain and predict human behaviour in order to influence it with precision, scope and depth.
Human “behavior” is understood under the functional contextualism as a whole: thoughts, beliefs, self-conception and emotions interact with each other, change over time and occur in temporal chains (a thought evokes a reaction, an emotion a behavior, or a behavior make us reflect and think and this is antecedent for a new reaction or chain of behaviours etc.) All them are the objects of the Psychology study, which aims to approach to their reality, to know how they influence each other, our life and our suffering… But most importantly, Psychology and Psychotherapy aim to provoke changes towards a more adaptive behavior in the particular world in which the individual lives, to build a greater personal satisfaction with one´s choices and values, despite the pain that life brings, a more resilient “self” and a more personal- meaningful life.
Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist
Between a Clinical Psychologist and a Psychotherapist there is no much difference or any in the practice as both have a particular formation (theoretical and practical) within branches/schools of Applied Psychology aimed to put in practice the models, experience, knowledge and techniques at the service of the clinical therapy practice: to heal individuals from suffering, costs in their lives from non adaptive patterns or learning. The Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist also receives supervision for the wok and interventions followed with their patients from other more expertise clinical psychologists or psychotherapists.
On the other hand, we are the result of our past history. Any behavior we emit is not and it cannot be independent from our own circumstances of life or past influences. Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy assess the history of the individual to grasp a deeper wider understanding of the root or etymon of the actual suffering and pattern that has shaped the person who attends therapeutic intervention. It is not possible o give you in which cases an adult develop a “problem”, a “disorder” or determine when they need psychotherapy because this depends on the: individual pattern, individual history and present circumstances . One adult could want and need psychotherapy for so many and varied reasons, and so personal: just because they feel empty or have lost connection with someone even when their lives can be from an objective point of view rich and full in many ways; in the other extreme and adult would not want to get help at all despite having and even realising that certain patterns of behaviours and way of thinking have lead them to many losses in their life, including or not their own health and safety. Children Psychology
A Child Psychologist, apart of possessing the earlier baggage to heal problematic patterns in children through clinical interventions, also study the development of the child in relation to their age in all the areas of the developmental stages (cognitive, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional) through observations , interactions, psychometric tests and assessment tools to explain how and why children reach or lack certain developmental milestones and particular necessary skills for each area. Also a children psychologist study how the child learn, think, interact, make friends, understand emotions and respond emotionally to their environment and the persons around them, to understand and asses the problematic factors or causes behind developmental deficits, in order to design adjusted individual interventions oriented to make the child reach his/her maximal development and independence for each of the developmental areas. When their development is considered natural for their age the purpose is to assess and get to know the environmental learning and underlying conditions responsible of the suffering or non adaptive patterns of the child for his/her specific environment and culture
We understand Child Psychology functions and aims are, in connection with the metaphor of a tree: making of the the ground that surrounds the tree a fertile nourished ground, to probabilize its roots to be grasped strongly into the earth to grow strong, high, into a direction, without loosing the contact with its origin: the roots or etymon. The ground from which the child learns and from which the tree takes its strength and resilience, although cannot be seen, influences from the past to the present and future of the child. Although each case is particular and will need different intervention we can only affirm in general that a child might need Children Psychology intervention when: a developmental deficit or certain skills for their development or independence are not met or not learnt and this causes certain suffering or problems in the environment of the child (family, school, with his/her relations….). When the child is not happy or sad and would like to be other version of themselves in some skills or areas, abandons or avoids certain things they used to engage and enjoy, when their fear or avoidance begins to impact certain areas of their lives or develop certain problematic patterns (see in children services: Child psychology Dublin).
Advanced Psychology for Life from the Etymon
Have you ever been able to notice the gentle movement of a tree when its twigs and branches are moving with the wind … that sad day when you sit crying without console?
In that hard day when all seemed the same… when nothing seemed to change, to change for better… You did not why that subtle movement of the branches and its leaves of few trees in front of you at some distance…. caught you for a while… It wasn´t that the pain disappeared but those flexible branches those trees that let the wind move through them, like a soft flute dance with the breeze, changed the crying… within that instant… did it make you stop from something? Did it made the crying or struggling different without understanding why? and even after when you try to remember the pain or how unfair or meaningless or…life was… was it the same? What those trees and their branches told while moving… what the wind whispered through them in that moment at that time to the soul…?
If you have wanted to evade from all, and for a while looked at the sky and the extreme parts of the branches and leaves were like floating moving fingers against the backstage of the sky, a sensation of dizziness and of missing the balance would came with it… making us believe and sense the unstable levity in which the trees live It can happens that in the same way we lose the sight of the ground, the origin… from where the tree takes its strength from the earth where he is attached, from some kind of roots where he belonged once.
What about the trees that have been twisted or weakened by the inclement weather? Sometimes nothing is what it seems to be. Other trees hide secrets, not revealed from the outside, about what they were once, that could be still there… will you struggle against the whimsical weather? convinced that in doing it you will get rid of the struggle itself? Would you rather be able to dance? with the weather?
Whatever the harshness of life might bring even amidst the worse weather what if we would learn ..if we would want and/or act… to continue growing… reaching our stars? Where do we look at? where do we act towards? in which direction we act, build and grow ?
The metaphor we have chosen to refer to human being and its suffering is the tree, to highlight in an easier way how a person´s believes, thoughts, rules, emotions…have an origin, a root, that develop, change, as the tree grows, and how there are elements: roots, the act of growing for the trunk in connection to its root and ground (the environment we learn from, our past learning) story that influences us in how the tree is going to be and grow and how it will do so in interaction with life difficulties-the whimsical weather
Sometimes the rigidity of our own rules and beliefs, and the fears behind, make us react avoiding life/ourselves or “fighting” life/and ourselves
